Melange is a venture backed startup based in Brooklyn, NY. In 2022, we raised $9.1 million dollars in a Series Seed led by Greenoaks Capital. We have spent two years heads down building the technology to properly automate prior art search.

We currently offer three product lines:

LITIGATION GRADE PRIOR ART SEARCH. Given a patent number and an initial meeting that gives our searchers background, we are capable of returning within two weeks: 1) a heat map of the top prior art references; 2) high end claim charts for each prior art reference, and 3) a brief report providing context and analysis on our results. Each of our searches is conducted and reviewed by a team of patent practitioners with decades of experience in patent litigation and examination. Our searches are faster and more comprehensive than any human search firm. We are already conducting these searches on behalf of some of the largest patent litigation firms in the world.

SEARCH FOR CORPORATE CLIENTS. For corporate clients, we conduct tactical searches that assist with patent acquisitions, licensing, and demand letter response.

OFFICE ACTION RESPONSE. As a subscription service, we can automatically and instantaneously send a packet that helps a patent prosecutor respond to an office action. The most notable part of this packet is a claim chart that shows all the ways a prosecutor might respond to the 102/103 contentions inside the office action in question. Thus far, the feedback we’ve received has been that this product saves our customers on average four hours per office action.

What we are building next:

WEB APPLICATION. Currently, all of our outputs are presented in Microsoft Word. There are advantages to this – e.g. accessibility, familiarity, and lower onboarding cost – but these trade off against interactivity and functionality. As we become a more entrenched and established player, we intend to improve our product offering by packaging it inside a web application.

CONTINUOUS PATENT INTELLIGENCE. We are working with corporate design partners to build a product that continuously monitors the patent landscape for freedom to operate concerns and relevant patent activity.
